Melbourne Twist

How do I even begin to describe to you how much I love Melbourne when it’s not as straightforward as you might think?…

You see, Melbourne isn’t your typical city and no matter how many times I’ve visited or how long I’ve stayed, I always leave feeling like I only just scratched the surface and that I need to revisit.

This is why I was beyond excited when I recently got to work with Qantas and Visit Melbourne and return to one of my favourite places – the best part? I got to bring my partner Adam along!

We embarked on our adventure together not fully knowing what was in store for us as the lovely folks at Melbourne Tourism had planned our itinerary. Here’s the real twist though, some of the activities were decided by my followers voting on my instagram polls. They had the choice of sending us off to either a destination or activity of their choosing, and for a person like me who’s normally in charge of planning and deciding most things when travelling it was a little bit daunting relinquishing control. But, I’m so glad it played out that way because Adam and I had such a fun time!

From cafe hopping & experiencing Melbourne’s infamous coffee culture, eating my way through Queen Victoria Markets to discovering hidden gems on a tour of the cities secret lane-ways and tucked away shopping arcades, there was so much to see and do and not nearly enough time to do all the shopping I had my heart set on which I think Adam was secretly relieved about tbh 😉

This trip was such a treat after Adam and I spent most of December/January and the beginning of February overseas in a Japanese hospital. It was one of the most challenging ordeals we have been through as Adam was diagnosed with a rare spinal infection. It gave us a chance to forget about all the tough stuff we’d been dealing with and reconnect with each other and feel normal again.

I had a few “pinch myself” moments during our Melbourne adventure when I’d look over at Adam and feel immensely grateful that I was able to share this amazing experience with him when just a few weeks prior he was in a hospital bed unable to walk.

We have both been fortunate enough to do a lot of travelling over the past few years and experience some absolutely amazing things together, but I have never felt more present and inspired than I did during our time in Melbourne. Of course it’s hard not to feel inspired when you’re in one of the most vibrant and creative cities (not to mention it’s been voted “most livable city” seven years running) in the world but I realised it was my perspective that had changed the way I now traveled. I noticed things around me in more detail and I appreciated things I must have taken for granted prior to this trip.

Not only did I rekindle my love affair with Melbourne this time, I actually rekindled my love affair with life itself and how lucky I felt to have had the twists and turns that have shaped me and continue to teach me about myself and the world around me.

Melbourne, you really are magic.

If you’ve never been to Melbourne before and are thinking about hopping across the ditch for a holiday, make it Melbourne! I promise you’ll have the best time. With Qantas doing direct flights to Melbourne from Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch it’s never been easier either.
