My Skin Savers – How To Get The J-Lo Glow
Our skin is the largest organ in our bodies, yes it’s an organ and a vital one at that. On the average adult human, skin occupies a whopping 1.73 square metres, and is responsible for literally keeping us intact, acting as a suit that houses our flesh, organs, and bones.
Ok that’s as ‘sciencey’ as I’m going to get but I just wanted to illustrate the vital role our skin plays, and for me it was one I took for granted all throughout my teens and twenties. My poor skin was neglected, mistreated, and disrespected and I have spent the past couple of years trying to make up for it.
Healthy glowing skin is something that I’ve learnt you can’t really fake and there are no real shortcuts (trust me I’m the shortcut queen) to achieving truly great looking skin.
Have you ever seen an episode of Real Housewives and noticed that some of the women have amazingly taut, baby smooth looking skin on their faces but then the camera zooms out and you notice their hands, legs and the rest of their bodies don’t match and just look a bit worse for wear? Well it’s often because there is so much hype and emphasis on skincare and beauty procedures for the face but the fact of the matter is, if we don’t consider looking after our skin with a more holistic approach all that money and time invested on the face is kind of a waste really.
So here is what I have learnt ladies. Good skin, and I mean truly good skin, takes commitment and patience but I promise it’s worth the effort.
So I urge you to readjust your skincare routine and instead of just thinking of it as a routine for your face, make it a routine that applies to your entire body.
Without further adieu here is my tried and tested operation “make my skin glow like J-Lo’s” skincare routine…..
Water: Essential to maintain optimum skin moisture, plus it replenishes skin tissue and increases elasticity. Basically it helps to prevent/delay the visible signs of ageing like fine lines & wrinkles. If that’s not reason enough it also helps to reduce the appearance of cellulite! Water works as a natural cleanser, flushing toxins out of the body, and keeping your body’s natural highways and byways clear which gives cellulite an easier escape route.
This is no joke, I was sceptical about this fact when I first heard fitness guru Ashy Bines mention it a few years back on one of her webisodes. But as someone who was shocking at drinking water throughout my day when I started making a conscious effort to drink 3 litres of water a day I noticed a pretty big difference after 3-4 weeks. Now 3 litres of water might seem like a lot and it was for me at first while my bladder and body were adjusting to the sudden drastic increase in hydration but it’s only for the first few days and then you get used to it. If you’re like me and not very good at remembering to actually drink water throughout the day or you just don’t like the taste of it then here are a few tricks I’ve learnt to help me stay on track.
Flavour your water: Infuse your water with things like slices of lemon or lime, cucumber slices are another great one too, and a cold glass of water with any of these flavour additions can be really refreshing. If you want to get a bit fancy another cool way of making you water more palatable is by getting ice cube trays and putting fresh fruit in them like mixed berries, nectarine or peaches, and then filling the trays up with water and freezing them. That way when you want to serve a pitcher of water when you have guests over or you’re just reaching for a glass of water and want something a bit appetising just pop in a couple of the frozen fruit ice cubes and it instantly looks prettier and tastes better.
Get a fun drink bottle: Having a drink bottle that you can easily take with you and have sitting at your desk, in the car or at the gym makes you more accountable for your water intake, plus it’s a visible reminder that you need to keep taking sips throughout the day in order to consume and achieve your water goal. Here are a couple of drink bottles which I own and love using.
dyln – living alkaline water bottle – these ones actually have a built in filter that alkalises your water which is even better!
Dry brushing: Dry brushing is scientifically proven to have so many benefits that it’s something I wish I had learnt to start doing when I was younger.
The skin is responsible for eliminating one quarter of our bodies waste, that is roughly 453 grams of waste product our skin (sweat glands) works hard to eliminate DAILY! So gross, but so necessary in order for our bodies to function at an optimum level.
There are some morning habits and rituals which help set you and your body up for a good start to the day and dry brushing is definitely something that everyone can benefit from adding to their am routine. Why? Because in a nutshell, dry brushing helps your skin to do its job better. Here are some of the many benefits…. It helps to exfoliate and brush away dead skin cells, it increases blood flow and improves circulation. Improved circulation means tighter, firmer skin and helps decrease the appearance of cellulite. Dry skin brushing also helps to stimulate nerve endings which can make you feel more energised and rejuvenated and is also a great boost to the lymphatic system which can directly improve your immune system function. So get dry brushing and improve the overall appearance and function of your skin and body. Here are a couple of dry brushes I personally use and like.
Exfoliate (in shower body scrub): I try to exfoliate in the shower using a body scrub two to three times a week and the results speak for themselves because if I skip this for a few weeks I really notice a difference in the overall appearance and texture of my skin.
I love the feeling of stepping out of the shower after using a scrub on my body. I feel like I’m squeaky clean and my skin has this glow about it after using it and it feels amazingly nourished and smooth. Some of the benefits to using a body scrub are similar to body brushing, like helping to improve circulation but with the added benefits of nourishing and moisturising the skin because of the oils that a good quality scrub contain. Also if you’re genetically prone to pesky ingrown hairs like me then you’re definitely going to become a huge fan of making exfoliating with a body scrub a part of your long term skin regime.
The one I am currently obsessed with using is from The Body Shop and I particularly like this one because the scent is really mellow and not overbearing like a lot of other scrubs, plus its cruelty free of course, so it’s perfect for all you fellow conscious consumers. A little tip, when you hop out of the shower after using a scrub try and avoid vigorously rubbing your skin dry with a towel and instead just pat all over so that you don’t remove all of the good moisturising oils that the body scrub contained.
Body oil – To me using a body oil after stepping out of the shower to lock in moisture has become one of my favourite rituals, and I think it all comes down to the fact that a body oil feels so much more decadent than a regular old moisturiser. The key is to make sure you pick a good one that contains high quality ingredients. My biggest tip when you are choosing a body oil is to find one that has a list of ingredients where the primary ingredient listed is an actual oil (this sounds like a no brainer but you’ll be surprised how many actually skimp on the good stuff and are comprised of mostly cheap crappy alcohol as it’s base ingredient) like jojoba, grapeseed, avocado, apricot kernel etc. You also want to avoid oils that are heavily scented with synthetic fragrance as these can often act as an irritant for sensitive skin. Choose one that contains essential aromatherapy oils which are not just good for your skin but are believed to help soothe and reinvigorate your senses. My current favourite is from Linden Leaves which is truly the most luxurious body oil, and the scent is a combination of rose, geranium & ylang ylang which leaves me smelling and feeling like a total goddess.
Beauty supplement: As the wise old saying goes, beauty comes from within, and ever since I ordered my first tub of marine collagen powder from a kiwi company called Ora Pure back in 2016, I couldn’t agree more. Collagen supplements are BIG here in Asia, and after living predominantly in Tokyo for the past 5 years I can see why Japanese women are obsessed with taking collagen supplements for the health of their skin, hair and nails – side note, have you ever seen a Japanese women’s skin up close and personal?! They all look half their age and their skin is flawless. Me, being shamelessly nosey, started asking my Japanese female acquaintances what their secret was and their answers all had one common thread, collagen. I have written about my quest to find the perfect collagen supplement in a previous post and I know that the Renew+ Pure Marine Collagen from Ora Pure is a superior product. There are a lot of collagen products on the market, but none that contain the added benefits of 2000mg AZM (Activated Zeolite Mordenite), 1000mg Vit C and Bromelian. The fact that it is also made in New Zealand, contains no additives, fillers or dyes, and is blended in a controlled and certified factory environment is important to me. If I am putting something in my body I want to know where it comes from, if it’s certified, and contains only natural ingredients, something a lot of other big name collagen supplement brands fail to have full disclosure and transparency on.
I won’t go into too much detail about the personal benefits of taking this collagen supplement have had on me because you can read about that here but I can tell you that it’s bloody amazing stuff. I loved and believed in the product so much that after a while I got to know the founders of the company and I now officially endorse the product as a brand ambassador. So if you do want to buy some and commit to using it to see and experience the benefits for yourself I have a discount code which you can use site wide that gives you 15% off any product. Simply visit www.orapure.co.nz and at checkout type in the code JESSIEG to get your discount.
